Biodiversity Group July update

Professor Dave Goulson gives many reasons for the decline of insects: loss of habitat, pesticides, foreign disease, climate change, fertilizers and light pollution. So what can be done to promote a wildlife friendly garden? Mow less, use no pesticide, leave the pests to other insects, encourage pesticide free towns (Hurrah for BoA Town Council) choose the right flowers – single flowers with obvious stamens and stigmas e.g catmint, lavender, comfrey.
BEWARE: some garden centres spray their plants with pesticides before selling! Ask or look to see if there are plenty of bees on the plants. Insects are so beautiful, enjoy them and the benefits they bring.
The Big Butterfly Count runs from 17th July to 9th August. Go to the Butterfly Conservation website to register your interest.
