The urgent funding appeal to save the Ancient Woodland and Wildlife Site located at ST809600 was successful – the beautiful historic Becky Addy Wood near Westwood has been saved for posterity with all its precious biodiversity.
Thanks to the generosity of more than a hundred people donating to the Friends of Becky Addy Wood (FROBAW) Appeal, Bradford on Avon Town Council was able to complete the purchase of the woodland at the end of April, before it went to auction. A huge thank you from FROBAW to everyone who responded so swiftly. Without your donations and encouragement, and the generous support of the Preservation Trust and the Area Board, the purchase of the wood by the Town Council within such a short timescale would simply not have been possible.
Becky Addy Wood is now safe, to the great relief of all those who find peace and tranquillity walking through this lovely little woodland. The wood will no longer host motorbike events or other inappropriate activities. Bradford on Avon Town Council and FROBAW will together draw up a detailed management plan to ensure the proper management and maintenance of the wood for the benefit of its fauna and flora, to enhance its conservation and to protect its rich biodiversity. There are plans, for example, to seek the designation of the wood by Natural England as a statutory nature reserve.
